US prosecutors lay out charges connected to huge JPMorgan hack

“US prosecutors have unveiled charges against three men accused of hacking into a host of major financial institutions, including JPMorgan Chase, and stealing the data of millions of people.
In an indictment unsealed today, Gery Shalon, Joshua Samuel Aaron and Ziv Orenstein face 23 charges, including computer hacking, wire fraud and securities fraud.”

Ashley Madison hack should serve as your IT security wake-up call

“Last month, the affair matchmaking website Ashley Madison was hacked by a group calling itself the Impact Team. On ZDNet, Violet Blue correctly points out, the website is "a honeypot for people who had something to hide" — between the company's claims that it is "the last truly secure space on the Internet," the cringeworthy advertisements it runs, and the salacious nature of the business, this hack was probably inevitable.
As the data from the hack has been disseminated over the last week, there has been an immense amount of social commentary made about Avid Life Media (the owner of Ashley Madison), and the subscribers who have had their email addresses made public. Bearing that in mind, the focus of this article is the enterprise security lessons that can be learned from this event.”

IRS: Hack Much Wider Than First Thought

“The Internal Revenue Service says cyber thieves may have accessed as many as 334,000 taxpayer accounts in a breach of its Get Transcript system, far more than the 114,000 accounts it originally estimated in May.
The Get Transcript online service, suspended in May, is aimed at simplifying the process taxpayers use to retrieve their tax records. It enables taxpayers to review their tax account transactions, line-by-line tax return information or wage and income reported to the IRS for a specific tax year. By circumventing Get Transcript's authentication protections, hackers are believed to have gained access to this taxpayer information, including Social Security numbers.”
